Health Care Meets IT: The Master of Science in Medical Informatics at Northwestern University

The Master of Science in Medical Informatics (MMI) program draws on the strengths of Northwestern University’s School of Continuing Studies and Feinberg School of Medicine to offer an interdisciplinary approach that enables students to leverage their backgrounds in health care or IT. One of the nation’s first and most highly regarded graduate programs in medical informatics, the MMI program affords working professionals maximum flexibility through its online format.

The burgeoning field of medical informatics unites information technology with health care to improve patient safety, maximize operational efficiency and reduce costs. Graduates of Northwestern’s MMI program take leadership roles in managing medical information to facilitate advances in clinical care, public health and medical research.

The MMI’s two-track approach allows those with backgrounds in health care or technology to gain the knowledge they need to master the field and fosters a dynamic forum between two critical disciplines. MMI students learn from experts in medicine and health information technology who have been instrumental in driving innovative solutions and establishing national health care informatics standards.

Graduates of the medical informatics program will influence and facilitate standards for the proper management of medical information.

Shelley Myers,
MMI Student

"Northwestern has a great medical school and a robust informatics department in its hospital, so I knew the program would be outstanding. I have a clinical background and a lot of experience with information technology, but I wanted to learn more. The formal education I’m getting is giving me an understanding that can’t be acquired solely on the job."
